Respect the environment wherever we are.

My name is Marijana. At the age of 14, I was thinking about my true passions and what high school to enroll like all my peers. Over time, I realized that I’m sensitive and caring to the natural environment I live in.  It made me upset when people dumped garbage into nature whereas I felt joyful seeing like-minded people. Because of this, I found a school with an environmental major, and I decided to study there. During my school time, we participated in several garbage collection activities in nature. We rented a bus, got big bags and collected wastes in a nearby forest. After our work was done, we enjoyed hanging out together with friends.

After graduation, I found my interest in tourism and started a tourism and hotel management university program. Tourism can have a positive impact on the economy as well as the preservation of history and culture from oblivion. However, it has effects on the other side of the coin as well. Commonly, it’s seen that tourists pay less care to the place they travel. On a positive note, travel agents and hoteliers can guide tourists in the right direction, educate them, and show how to be responsible with the environment.  In this way, it is possible to reduce the level of pollution and increase people’s responsibility wherever they are.

Responsibility toward the environment and the tourism

I realized the importance of protecting nature safe and clean not only for our health but also for the tourism industry. Taking my responsibility, I collected trashes in my village on many occasions. Indeed, we have to ask ourselves: will anyone from abroad come to us again if they see the garbage lying around? Do we want to look at the flowers around us while walking on bottles of juice? I believe that these issues are due to a lack of awareness of our natural habitat. Often, I tell people that it is important to take care of the environment if we care for ourselves. I always suggest keeping the bag of chips or juice bottles in backpacks until coming across a container or trash can.

Likewise, it’s possible in the tourism sector to contribute sustainable development goals.  For example, the use of sustainable materials in the construction of a hotel can greatly reduce the level of pollution and the generated waste in the process. Additionally, the use of recyclable materials in hotels will contribute to becoming a greener business. To reduce the level of pollution and the emission of harmful substances, hoteliers must start thinking about sustainable ways of doing business. Besides, the cooperation of tour operators and hoteliers to adopt joint strategies for greener tourist flows is crucial.

My values and Fairforce

I joined the green community of Fairforce to spread the word of saving our planet. It’s pleasant to work with people who share the same values as me. If we act together, we can change things for better in tourism and many other economic sectors. All of us need to remember that how much nature has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing on earth. By awakening our inner understanding of nature, we can save the planet. We are all responsible to preserve our natural resources even as travel agents or individual tourists.
